About the Role
OpenLoop is looking for a strategic and hands-on Director of Engineering to join our team remotely in the U.S. -or- in our HQ in Des Moines, IA. In this role, you will be responsible for driving the development of our technology roadmap, lead and working alongside high-performing engineering teams, and integrating competitive / scalable software solutions into our digital health platform.
What You’ll Do:
Lead with empathy and hands-on support—working alongside your engineering team to build stable, scalable infrastructure that supports OpenLoop’s growth and mission.
Write code and contribute directly to projects to stay close to the work, understand technical challenges firsthand, and model best practices—especially within our AWS CDK and serverless stack.
Guide engineering efforts across platform, infrastructure, product development, and DevOps, helping the team stay focused, aligned, and set up for success.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in Product, Design, Clinical, and Data to translate big-picture goals into thoughtful, executable technical plans.
Champion a culture of continuous learning, shared ownership, and thoughtful innovation—encouraging your team to grow, experiment, and thrive together.
Support team growth through hiring, mentoring, and creating a space where diverse voices and backgrounds are welcomed, valued, and empowered.
Keep security, privacy, and compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.) top of mind, guiding your team to build trustworthy, healthcare-grade software.
Make informed decisions around tools and technologies—balancing when to build in-house vs. partner with vendors to best serve our platform’s needs.
Occasionally flex between strategy and execution as needed, pitching in to help with whatever’s required to keep the team and product moving forward.

Who You Are:
8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in leadership roles where you've grown and guided high-performing teams—ideally in a startup or fast-paced, tech-forward healthcare environment.
A hands-on leader who enjoys staying close to the work—you still enjoy writing code, reviewing architecture, and can understand the challenges your team faces firsthand.
An experienced Director that supports, coaches and develops your teams, through empathy and healthy competitive encouragement.
Years of knowing how to blend technical best practices, while being open to feedback, new industry knowledge and different perspectives.
Expert in cloud-native technologies, with hands-on experience using AWS CDK and building server-less, event-driven systems (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, DynamoDB, etc.).
Knowledgable in frameworks built on secure, compliant software—especially in healthcare, you know how to navigate through complex regulations like HIPAA and SOC 2.
Holistic thinker, evaluating architecture and trade-offs, with the ability to communicate technical strategy to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Promote and offer technology solutions that will ultimately improve healthcare access and outcomes - always aware of the impact of the work and the team is delivering
You are experienced with fast-paced environments, and are able to shift through competing priorities, keeping yourself and your teams aligned and on time with team KPIs
You foster a positive environment of team building, respect and encouragement across all levels on your team
