As October brought cooler temperatures, digital health trends heated up with major announcements across the industry. Amazon debuted prescription kiosks, while lawmakers’ failure to extend telehealth flexibilities left millions without virtual care coverage.

Amazon Pharmacy to Roll Out Kiosks Dispensing Prescriptions at One Medical Offices

This December, new medication dispensing kiosks are set to arrive at One Medical locations in Los Angeles, a primary care service provided by Amazon. This rollout will enable patients to pick up their prescriptions immediately after their appointments. The kiosks will stock commonly prescribed medications, including inhalers, antibiotics, and blood pressure medications. However, controlled substances and refrigerated items won’t be available. 

This move addresses a common issue, which is that over a quarter of prescriptions go unfilled each year, and nearly half of chronic condition medications aren’t taken as prescribed.

Microsoft Extends AI Advancements in Dragon Copilot to Nurses and Partners to Enhance Patient Care

Dragon CoPilot, Microsoft’s clinical AI assistant, now includes the first commercially available ambient solution designed specifically for nursing workflows. The technology captures nurse-patient interactions and converts them into documentation that seamlessly integrates into electronic health records. 

Currently, over 25% of a nurse’s shift is spent on documentation, and a survey found that 65% of nurses report burnout and high stress levels. The press release explains that this technology helps address these problems.

Telehealth Flexibilities Expire Amid Government Shutdown

Lawmakers missed the September 30th deadline to extend telehealth flexibility in Medicare, resulting in millions of Americans losing access to virtual care coverage. Congress was unable to agree on a funding bill, resulting in the federal government shutting down. Now, many of the previous telehealth restrictions are back in place.

Additionally, the Acute Care Hospital at Home program also expired, affecting over 400 facilities across 39 states that provide hospital-level care in individuals' homes.

Top Democrat Demands More Detail from Medicare Insurers About Their Use of AI

Senator Richard Blumenthal is pressing some of the nation's largest Medicare Advantage insurers (Humana, CVS Health, and UnitedHealth Group) on their use of AI tools in making decisions about patient care and coverage. They want to know the inventory of AI products they’re using and what policies they have in place to prevent AI from unduly influencing providers' decisions. 

The Democratic senators' questions stem from an investigation that found payment denials for seriously ill patients had increased profoundly after these insurers began using AI and predictive tools.

FDA Requests Public Comment on Real-World Evaluation of AI-Enabled Medical Devices

On September 30th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a request seeking input on how to measure and evaluate AI-enabled medical devices in real-world settings. The article explains that the FDA is particularly interested in:

  • Determining the best metrics to measure safety and effectiveness

  • Identifying the most effective data sources for monitoring

  • Understanding how user behavior impacts device performance

  • And more 

At this time, the FDA isn’t using this information to make regulatory changes, but to expand the conversation in the healthcare AI community. Comments must be made by December 1, 2025.

AI Adoption In Healthcare Is Surging: What A New Report Reveals

A new Menlo Ventures report reveals that the healthcare industry is deploying AI at 2.2 times the rate of the broader economy. Spending has reached $1.4 billion in 2025 alone, nearly tripling last year's total. In just two years, AI adoption has jumped from 3% to 22%. 

Currently, health systems lead with 27% adoption, followed by outpatient providers at 18%. The main spending categories include ambient clinical documentation and coding automation at $600 million and $450 million, respectively. Startups are capturing 85% of AI spending, and major players, like Kaiser Permanente and Mayo Clinic, are investing heavily in AI rollouts as well.

​​WellTheory Raises $14M for Virtual Autoimmune Care Platform

The virtual platform for autoimmune care, WellTheory, has just raised $14 million in Series A funding, led by 7wire Ventures, Box Group, and others. This brought its total capital to $26.2 million. The platform provides care teams for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Crohn’s disease. They intend to use the funds to expand programs for employers and payers, as well as accelerate AI development, particularly for their two new tools: Care Scribe and Care Hub.

DUOS Snags $130M to Advance AI, Grow Payer Partnerships

The Minneapolis-based technology company DUOS has raised $130 million in funding, led by FTV Capital. Their goal is to expand their platform that helps health plan members navigate benefits and access care. The company connects patients with resources for health-related social needs, such as food and transportation, based on their location and coverage.
